KWSC organizes Karachi Water Summit 20204 on World Water Day
Mayor Karachi and Chairman Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has announced plans to ensure an additional 300 MGD water supply in Karachi before the end of his tenure as mayor.
His term is ending on June 19, 2027, and by June 18, he said, he aims to that the KWSC has added an extra 300 MGD water to its system. Recognizing the acute disparity between water demand and supply in Karachi, he said, there’s a need for cooperation between provincial and federal governments, along with private sectors, to address this issue.
He emphasizes that public-private partnerships are the way forward for Karachi. Wahab, was speaking at a Karachi Water Summit co-organized by the KWSC, Karachi Water Sewerage System Improvement Project, NED University and Panjwani Hisaar Water Institute on World Water Day held on Friday. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring equal access to water for all citizens of Karachi, acknowledging that water is not only a basic human necessity but also essential for peace and stability within various communities. He praised the reforms undertaken by the KWSC and advocated for greater autonomy for it to serve Karachi better.
He also stressed the need for digitization to enhance transparency and accountability. Meanwhile, the KWSC Chief Executive Officer Syed Salahuddin Ahmed pledges to continue its efforts to conserve water, improve recycling, and ensure sustainable water management. He invited cooperation from domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers to safeguard water resources for current and future generations. This initiative aims not only to secure water access for all but also to contribute to increased national revenue from Karachi. He said that the water and sewerage corporation reaffirm its commitment to implementing modern solutions for water management and applauds the efforts made to eliminate illegal connections, which have resulted in a 35% increase in revenue recovery and the safe storage of 25 million gallons of water daily.


CEO KW&SC Participates in Global Water Summit in London
CEO KW&SC Syed Salahuddin Ahmed will represent Pakistan in the Global Water Summit to be held in London.
The Global 300 Water Leaders Group UK has invited Syed Salahuddin Ahmed, CEO / MD of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), to participate in the Global Water Summit in London, United Kingdom, scheduled for April 15-17, 2024.
Syed Salahuddin Ahmed is the sole official from Pakistan designated to address water security concerns at the event.
The theme of this year's Global Water Summit is ‘Security for a Changing Planet’. Organizers aim to highlight the interconnection between water security, climate change, and the potential economic and environmental stability water investment can bring to the planet.
Syed Salahuddin Ahmed will engage in high-level discussions during the Development Finance Dialogue session, addressing topics such as innovative approaches to bridge the gap between utilities striving to achieve SDG6 and the financial institutions supporting them, other topics include unlocking funds for SDG6 expansion through efficient utilities and strategies to tackle lost or stolen water to enhance revenue and investor confidence.
Mr. William Muhairwe, Executive Director of the Global Water Leaders Group, stated that following workshops held in Vietnam, Côte d'Ivoire, and Mexico, the 300 Water Leaders Initiative has gained significant momentum, and the Global Water Summit will serve as a platform to capitalize on this global network.

A gala dinner on April 16 will feature the Global Water Awards, recognizing outstanding achievements in the international water industry. For the first time, an 'SDG6 Champion' award will be presented to the utility leader with the most inspiring and ambitious roadmap to achieving SDG6.
Describing it as a remarkable opportunity to represent Pakistan, Syed Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized the importance of addressing water security issues facing the country. He highlighted KWSC's efforts in reshaping the utility and ensuring water security for Karachi, underscoring the need for initiatives tailored to local needs.
Syed Salahuddin stressed the importance of aggressive measures to reduce Non-Revenue Water, diversify water resources, and harness the potential of wastewater treatment. He affirmed KWSC's commitment to water conservation, recycling, and promoting energy efficiency in the water sector.
The Global Water Summit brings together 300 leaders from across the globe, and Salahuddin has been elected as a Steering Committee member from South Asia in recognition of KWSC's recent achievements.
It's worth noting that two months ago, US Ambassador Donald Blome, along with US Consul General Conrad Tribble, visited KWSC's head office in Karsaz, where they commended the performance of Karachi's Mayor / Chairman and CEO/MD.

KWSC assures uninterrupted services during holidays of Eid-ul-Fitr
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Karachi Water Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) Engr. Syed Salahuddin Ahmed instructed to implement special arrangements for the supply and drainage of water throughout the city before Eid-Ul-Fitr.
In this regard, a letter was issued to the relevant authorities of the KWSC and they were tasked to maintain coordination with the district administration and elected public representatives on the occasion of Eid-Ul-Fitr.
Effective measures for the supply and sewerage of water would be taken around Eid Gatherings, Mosques, Imambargahs, and schools throughout the city. Moreover, ensuring the cleanliness of sewage overflow while maintaining proper sewerage on main roads and public places, especially around Eid Gatherings, is essential to avoid any inconvenience for citizens and worshipers.

In addition to this, while instructing the Incharge Hydrants Cell, the CEO said that during Eid-Ul-Fitr, necessary water tankers should be provided to Eid Gatherings, Mosques, Imambargahs, and Schools to fulfill the water needs of the public.
All chief engineers and superintendent engineers were directed to ensure uninterrupted water supply throughout the city and provide duty rosters for staff during the general holidays of Eid-ul-Fitr, so that all executive engineers remain on high alert to handle any emergency situations.
The CEO directed the executive engineers of KWSC’s workshops that all machinery should be kept ready at all times for the convenience of citizens, and the presence of drivers should be ensured to facilitate the operation of suction and jetting machines.
He emphasized that no shortcomings would be tolerated in the arrangements for Eid-Ul-Fitr because providing better facilities to citizens is their top priority.
